Analog frequency.

Is a continuous signal in which one time-varying quantity represents another time-based variable.
Example: For analog frequency selective filters, realizations having minimum circuit element sensitivity have been developed. Thus, by using high-quality components high-performance filters can be implemented.

Analog-to-digital converter.
Noun
Is a system that converts an analog signal, such as a sound picked up by a microphone or light entering a digital camera, into a digital signal.
Example: The ADC (analog-to-digital converter) converting an analog signal to a digital one usually performs the operations of sampling-and-hold, quantization, and encoding.

Continuous-Time Signals

A continuous-time (CT) signal is a function, s(t), that is defined for all time t contained in some interval on the real line. For historical reasons, CT signals are often called analog signals.
Example: A continuous time signals is called an analog signal while a discrete-time discrete-amplitude signal is called a digital signal.

Digital signal.

Is a signal that is being used to represent data as a sequence of discrete values; at any given time it can only take on, at most, one of a finite number of values.
Example: In a digital signal, the physical quantity representing the information may be a variable electric current or voltage.

Discrete-Time Signals.
Noun
A discrete-time signal is only defined at integer values of the “time” variable. However, while discrete-time signals can be easily stored and processed on a computer, it is impossible to store the values of a continuous-time signal for all points along a segment of the real line.
Example: of discrete-time signals can be found in demographic studies in which various attributes, such as average budget, crime rate, or pounds of fish caught, are tab-ulated against such discrete variables as family size, total population, or type of fishing vessel, respectively.

Electrical signal.

The signal can be artificially generated by an electronic circuit (oscillator). However, in most practical applications, the electrical signal represents the variation of another physical quantity in the passage of the transducer, converted into electricity by a transducer.
Example: The electrical signal is obtained in this case by conversion of the preamplified optical power through an optical amplifier with net gain coefficient G and noise figure NF.

Independent variable.
Noun
An independent variable is exactly what it sounds like. It is a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure. For example, someone's age might be an independent variable.
Example: The independent variable is usually applied at different levels to see how the outcome differs.

Power signal.
Noun
Is a signal whose power is finite and energy is finita.
Example: The process of capturing power signals is straightforward and easily accomplished by a capturing equipment with high sampling rates, for example, an oscilloscope, which can be obtained at reasonably small cost.

Signal energy.
Noun
Is a commonly used measurement in engineering. Traditionally in signal processing, the energy of a signal is defined using the square of the signal magnitude, the envelope of squared signal magnitude or the integral of squared signal magnitude.
Example: If the signal energy over one period is larger than zero but finite, then the total energy is infinite and the signal power is finite. Therefore, the signal is a power signal.

A detectable physical quantity or impulse (such as a voltage, current, or magnetic field strength) by which messages or information can be transmitted.
Example: Hearing takes sound waves and converts the deflections that they cause on the stereocilia into electrical signals, while pressure sensing takes the direct pressure on the skin to promote the opening on ion channels resulting in the generation of an action potential.
